Spy Kids creator Rodriguez to direct Priyanka Chopra

Kids growing up in the 2000s are extremely familiar with the Spy Kids series, with most of them aspiring to have a secret basement and a hi-tech wrist watch as they hunt down for evil people in their backyards. Although the Spy Kids roots are perhaps long forgotten, their sole creator, Robert Rodriguez is returning to the familiar backyard for a new movie with Netflix.

According to Deadline, Rodriguez has signed up for writing, producing and directing an original Netflix kids superhero sci-fi movie called ‘We Can Be Heroes’. Indian fans are in for a treat, as the first cast member to be announced earlier in the day was none other than our very own desi girl Priyanka Chopra. The cast features some big names including Akira Akbar who played Monica Rambeau, the lively, headstrong junior Rambeau in Captain Marvel, Christian Slater from Mr. Robot, Boyd Holbrook (Logan), YaYa Gosselin (The Purge), Pedro Pascal (Narcos) and several other familiar faces. The plot revolves around alien invaders kidnapping Earth’s superheroes leading to a group of children having to team up to save their parents and the world. Although specific details such as which character will be played by whom is under wraps, the wait won’t be too long. According to preliminary reports, the team has already begun shooting at Texas; implying information will be out in good time.

Rodriguez has already proven his worth as one of the few directors who are capable of pretty much directing every genre from gritty adult dramas Sin City to family adventures like Sharkboy. His last project was Alita: Battle Angel which fetched spectacularly good reviews but unfortunately didn’t reap major profits in the box office. At this moment, he is one among several high-profile filmmakers to jump on board the Netflix bandwagon, in line for more original content for the entertainment consumers.

We can be Heroes is expected to start streaming somewhere around May next year.
