Marvel working to diversify Phase 4

It’s no secret that Marvel boss Victoria Alonso has been leading the flag to diversify the Marvel Cinematic universe, with the support of a huge number of fans who want to see more depictions of emerging sexuality, races and gender in MCU which has till now being majorly straight, male-centred lead characters. We have already seen some experimentation with this concept and delightfully enough they worked out well. Black Panther, which explored African culture and tribes, with Chadwick Boseman in the lead received a cascade of praise from critics and viewers alike. The movie became the first superhero film to receive the Oscar nomination for the Best Picture Award.  On the gender front, MCU surpassed itself in the promotions of Captain Marvel, with Brie Larson leading from the front.

It all comes down to the LGBTQ community who haven’t being expressed through a screen time they deserve. Till date, the cinematic universe has introduced us to pretty non-heroic and invisible gay characters- Joey Gutierrez on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and the noticeably missed cameo by Joe Russo talking about his date in Infinity Wars. In a recent Reddit AMA, Alonso hinted that Phase 4 will be a contrasting change. “I would feel honoured to have a member of the LQBTQ community represented in our movies and I hope the future shows that,” she said. This aligned with Joe Russo’s comment on SiriusXM where he said, “You know, there is a gay character coming up in some recent movies. I think Feige will confirm that soon.” Some people speculate that Miss America Chavez, the LQBTQ Latinx in the comics can carry the torch and be introduced through the multiverse. Three big characters of the MCU- Loki, Valkyrie and Okoye have already been declared bisexual by Alonso, and it might also happen that Disney’s new Loki show will explore the vast possibilities. Either way, MCU does have a significant number of options and the chances of a new representation of sexuality.
