‘Kabir Singh’ Accused of Misogyny

Shahid Kapoor is a versatile actor of the Bollywood Movie Industry, giving us gems like; ‘Jab We Met’, ‘Kaminey’, ‘Haider’ and many more and have praised by the masses and the critics alike for his engaging performances. His recent movie, ‘Kabir Singh’ came out on 21st June and the movie have so far done well in the box office and might cross the 100cr mark as well. However, despite the movie’s success, many critics bashed the film for its misogynistic approach

While fans lauded the movie with praises, CBFC member Vani Tripathi Tikoo shared her insights to the film’s portrayal of misogyny, on her Twitter handle. In her series of Tweets, she mentions how misogyny have played a part often in big Bollywood movies and masses seems to appreciate it. She also states that, ‘big stars’ should choose their scripts for a film carefully as they have the power to influence the young audiences, which is why what they show on the screen becomes a matter of public interest. 

The storyline of ‘Kabir Singh’ revolves around the character Kabir Singh, who is Delhi Institute student and a successful surgeon but have deep rooted anger issues. He falls in love with a girl named Preeti from the college, but a heartbreak leads him towards his self-destructive downfall. The movie stars Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani in the lead roles as Kabir and Preeti

However, Vani Tripathi was not the only one pointing fingers at the movies misogynistic take on Kabir’s downfall, singer Sona Mohapatra also stated that actors should be more careful taking up a role and understand the effect the character could impose on the general public. Mohapatra is known for her contributions in the industry with songs like ‘Bedardi Raja’ from the film Delhi Belly and ‘Bahara’ from I Hate Luv Stories and ‘Ambarsariya’ from Fukrey which have successfully connected with the masses. However, the film after its release so far boasted a good response from the public, while critics revealed a mixed review but the acting performances of both the leads were appreciated.
