Dark necessities

For centuries now, we have become accustomed to the archetypal character of heroes who are perfect in every sense of the term. Be it safeguarding the heroine or carrying out the responsibilities as a good son, he has topped all ranks and been everyone’s favourite.

In 2018, this stereotypical image is being crashed by actors like Ranveer Singh, Rajkumar Rao, Ranbir Kapoor and Akshay Kumar. Over the years, they have played ultimate good characters and now it’s time to break that tradition and explore their talents in varied fields.

In Sanjay Leela Bansali’s 2018 release Padmavaat, Ranveer did a tremendously threatening Alauddin Khilji whom the audience both admired and loathed. Playing only the ethical characters since the very beginning of his career, this one was a break and he said it was of immense pleasure to be able to be the badass guy. People who could not grasp the opinion of watching a protagonist as an antagonist could not cease praising his skills after this movie.

Releasing this year the biopic of Sanjay Dutt, Ranbir is to play Sanju Baba’s role. Although achieved much success and fame throughout his career, the actor was once highly addicted to drugs and imprisoned which is not quite the flavours one search for in a conventional hero.

The 2010 movie Robot had casted Akshay as the antagonist -Dr. Richard where he shared his screen with the very talented protagonist Rajnikant. His dexterity was appreciated in equals with the aged senior.

Rajkumar Rao in his new movie has been portrayed as a Pakistani terrorist in Britain, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh. He is alleged to have conspired the murder of Daniel Pearl back in 2002, an American journalist. The young talent feels that being an actor calls for versatility which is not provided by persistent roles in every movie.

The trend of anti-hero played by supposed heroes like Shah Rukh Khan in Darr, Baazigar or Anjaam had begun earlier in 90s. However, advancement, recognition and appraisal of the same are very recent.
